Computers

WALL-E, BURN-E and EVE live together in the VR-Arena rack and cover the two rendering modes plus their control:

Each computer has a single IP address.

WALL-E — 2D presentation machine

WALL-E is a Dell Precision 7820 that drives all three projectors with a 2D image across the whole display surface.

  • Final resolution on the surface: 5592 × 1600 after the projector overlap is applied.
  • The raw signal is 3 × 2560 × 1600, one stream per projector.
  • GPU: 1 × NVIDIA RTX A5000.
  • Deltacast 4K HDMI capture card, with 2 × 4K HDMI inputs.

BURN-E — 3D / active stereo machine

BURN-E is an HP Z6 that runs the three projectors in active stereo mode.

  • GPU: 2 × NVIDIA RTX 6000 Ada.
  • Capture: 2 × Datapath cards — one with 2 × 4K HDMI inputs, one with 2 × 4K DisplayPort inputs.

EVE — master / control machine

EVE is the master machine for WALL-E and BURN-E: it controls which program is started on those machines and handles the control as a pilot.

  • GPU: 1 × NVIDIA RTX A4000.
  • Deltacast 4K HDMI capture card, with 2 × 4K HDMI inputs.
  • Pilot control station in the VR-Arena: an HP monitor on a stand at the front of the room runs the control software, with the Stanley Sportech operator keyboard and a Logitech mouse.
  • 3D glasses bag in the rack: a green storage bag holding the active stereo glasses. The bag should be kept closed, especially when BURN-E 3D is selected in the control interface, because that turns on the IR tracker, which connects to the glasses.

Behind the pilot-station monitor are two video KVM extender units:

  • Lindy 70m CAT6A HDMI/TYPE-C USB 3.0 Extender (receiver) — connected to EVE; carries the monitor, keyboard, mouse and other USB devices from the G112 rack to the pilot station in the room.
  • Logitech MeetUp (camera/speaker, above the monitor) — backup camera/speaker; currently connected to EVE via the Lindy KVM box. Can be moved to the USB-C HDMI/USB hub so it can be connected directly to a laptop instead.
  • Kramer DigiTools — the video extender used to connect an own laptop in the VR-Arena for presentations.

At the pilot station there is also an HDMI + charging hub with HDMI and USB connections, plugged into a USB-C port on any device (laptop, etc.). This is the hub the Logitech camera/speaker can be moved to for direct laptop connection.

The IR tracker is mounted in the upper corner of the room. A red dot is visible when the tracker is active (i.e. BURN-E 3D is selected); it disappears when the room is switched to a 2D mode.

TV and conference camera (behind the audience)

Behind the audience there is a TV connected to EVE as a secondary monitor, and next to it a Konftel Cam50 connected to EVE through a USB extender. EVE has Zoom and OBS installed, so it can act as the main conference computer for the room.

Fill in the DNS name, VNC address and PDU port for WALL-E, BURN-E and EVE once the machines are commissioned.

Predecessor: WALLY (retired)

The earlier machine of this name, WALLY, was used to render the whole projection surface in stereo (one screen/output per eye). Patric has used it for presentations with Unreal Engine, among other things.

  • VNC DNS: vnc://wally.c.itn.liu.se/
  • VNC IP: vnc://172.19.8.31/

These addresses belong to the old machine and are kept for historical reference only.
